Best Flutes 2018

When buying a flute, it is important to note that flutes range from beginner instruments that cost under $100, to professional instruments made of silver or gold that can cost more than $15,000.

When looking for a student flute, you have many options to choose from. Student model flutes often have a few altered features that make the instrument easier to play. These include closed holes, offset G’s, different foot joints, and curved head joints. These are good things to know whether or not you want when buying a beginner or even an intermediate flute. We will look at a few of these options before we check out the different instruments.

What to Think about When Buying a Flute

Open/Closed hole flute and key position

Beginner flutes often have covered holes, to help students who are new to the flute or have small fingers. Many students start on flutes like this, which make it much easier to make sound consistently and easily. Once the student is older and more experienced, they can buy a better quality flute with open holes. Another option is to get removable pads, which you can put in an open-hole flute to make it easier to play, and not have to worry about buying a new instrument.

Another thing that beginning instruments usually have to make them easier for new players is an offset G key. This makes a more natural hand position that helps students who are just getting started to get used to the flute fingerings without straining.

Materials

Flutes can be made out of many different materials – professional flutes can range from anywhere from wood to solid silver or solid gold. Of course, student models are more often made with less expensive materials, such as nickel or less expensive kinds of silver. These are more durable and more affordable, but often still produce a pretty good sound that is good for a beginning player.

Foot Joint

Flute foot joints also vary – student flutes often only go down to the note middle C, while professional flutes can play a B below that. Again, this makes things easier for newer players, and helps beginners learn with more ease. These are referred to as “C” or “B” foot joints.

Curved Head Joints

Lastly, a feature of some student flutes is to have a curved head joint, making it easier to hold the flute and much more comfortable for small players until their arms and fingers get big enough to hold a flute with a straight head joint more easily. Some of the fancier student models come with both types of head joints so that the player can switch without needing a whole new flute.
